Do you suffer from low back pain, despite hitting the gym regularly?
Most often it is those who push themselves the hardest, who actually suffer the most. This is purely down to subtle technique and body position. I'm yet to see anyone who can squat thrust or perform weighted squats (especially to music or for a set time) who is able to engage their core effectively. Sadly this includes too many main stream personal trainers and Yoga instructors.
The result? We end up over recruiting some muscles (glutes and shoulders) whilst under recruiting others (pelvic floor, abs and diaphragm). The result? We end up working against our core, instead of with it!
My 3 top tips for engaging:
1) Move in time with your body, not the beat!
2) Breathe, don't strain! Its all about the exhale!
3) Take the time to really get your core engaged, before you even think of adding weight... you'll be surprised!
If this sounds familiar and you really want to get strong from the core, come for a session or sign up for a class (from April). Enjoy the light bulb moment and never train the same again!
